Half-Up Hairstyles for Short, Thick Hair

Hey y'all! It's been a hot minute since I did a hair post. I got great feedback on the post where I showed how I curl my hair so I figured it's time to make another one. This one is all about some of my favorite hairstyles: half-up hair. These styles are perfect for those days I want my hair down, but I'm working in the lab so it needs to stay out of my face. But before we get too far into hairstyles, I wanted to share what products I use to keep my hair in place.

First, I prep my hair with a little texture. I either use Batiste Dry Shampoo or Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. Both products give my super fine hair some grip. Once my hair is styled, I use my favorite hairspray, TRESemme Perfectly Undone Hairspray. This is a fine control hairspray so it doesn't make you hair hard or sticky. I use it every single day because it holds all sorts of styles so well!

Now the hairstyles!

1. Halfway French Braid
This is my favorite. I get so many compliments on it! Plus, as long as you know how to French braid, it's super easy. If not, check out this awesome tutorial here. All I do for this hairstyle is French braid my hair until I've braided half of my hair (usually to just at my ears), then braid that hair the rest of the way down without adding more hair. I love this style because it's easy to get volume on top and my front pieces tend to fall out over the day so this style can look really soft and feminine. Set it with some hairspray and you're good to go!

2. Twisted Half-Up
This is just a play on your typical half-up hairstyle. I saw a similar style on The Small Things Blog and immediately fell in love! I personally love to use all the hair in the back as opposed to just front pieces just so I can boost the volume (the higher the hair the closer to Jesus).

3. Retro Twist Half-Up
I really struggled with a name for this one. But the way I twist the hair kind of reminds me of the retro pin-up style. This was is super quick to do. I just twist a small section of hair on each side and with each full twist, I add a little more until I've used half of that half (so a quarter of my hair). I secure it with a clip while I twist the other side, then bring them together and secure with an elastic. To add a little bit of fancy-ness to it, I wrapped a small piece of hair around to cover the elastic.

I love half-up hairstyles so much because there's so much you can do! All of these are also great for thick hair! I usually use a little more than half of my hair just so there's not this huge amount laying on my neck, which is super helpful in the summer. Do you have any favorite half-up hairstyles? I'd love to hear about them!
